Young scientists hold a pub chat with a difference

The Bowery Pub in Sheffield will be the unconventional venue for a scientific Question-Time style debate next week (10 April 2010) which will be hosted by a group of young researchers from the University of Sheffield.

The Science Brainwaves Group, which consists of a number of PhD students who are passionate about bringing science to the public, has organised the debate which will discuss how science is reported in the media.

A panel including Dr Allan Pacey, an expert in fertility at the University who is often quoted in the media, and BBC health correspondent, Emma Wilkinson, will be discussing science journalism, giving members of the public the chance to find out how and why science makes the headlines.

Martin Turner, a PhD student in Biology and Biotechnology who helped organise the event, said: “Many different factors can impact on how science is presented to the public. It can be tough for journalists to find out the facts and science stories can be pretty scary sometimes, leaving people unsure of what to believe. We want to give people a better understanding of how the news is made from both a scientist’s and journalist’s perspective and our aim is for this event will reveal the inner workings of reporting science.”

The event will run from 3pm - 5.30pm on 10 April 2010 at The Bowery on Devonshire Street in Sheffield.

The event is free but strictly by ticket only. For further details and to register please visit www.sciencebrainwaves.com/events
