Is (Temperature) Measurement Necessary or Important?

In everyday life people hardly give measurement a second thought. If they do it’s around things such as litres of fuel, weight of food, distances to places. Despite the general lack of awareness of the importance of measurement it is nevertheless essential for the proper functioning of any modern society.

Professor Graham Machin (Visiting Professor, Faculty of Advanced Technology) will address this issue in his Inaugural Professorial Lecture on Tuesday 23rd February 2010.

Beginning with the general idea of measurement, the units and the concept of a measurement system, the lecture will examine the importance of one specific type of measurement, that of temperature.

Temperature itself is a difficult concept to grasp so this will be explained and the establishment of a temperature scale on a worldwide basis described. From “simple” measurements around the home, to industrial processes, food production, medicine and meteorology, the necessity of reliable temperature measurement will be demonstrated.

The lecture takes place on Tuesday 23rd February at the Glamorgan Conference Centre on the University of Glamorgan’s Treforrest campus. Light refreshments will be served from 5.30pm and the lecture starts at 6pm. A buffet will be served afterwards.
