Glamorgan student midwife wins National Midwifery Award

A University of Glamorgan midwifery student has been awarded one of the UK’s top midwifery prizes at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Annual Awards, the UK’s most prestigious midwifery awards, held in London on 27th January, 2010.

Charlotte Monnelly has scooped one of three Pampers Student Vision awards requesting funding for a placement at the Ketbhene Clinic in Ethiopia. The awards were held at the Royal Garden Hotel Kensington. Attending the ceremony was RCM Patron Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, Princess Anne.

Charlotte’s award will help to fund an elective placement to gain greater understanding of caring for women in a developing country, and observing and the midwifery and obstetric difficulties faced in Ethiopia.

Dr Gillian Marsh, Technical External Relations Manager at Pampers, said: “Pampers understands the importance of providing support to midwives. We are proud to support an award such as this, which recognises the hard work that students like Charlotte are doing, in this case towards developing practices across the world so that mothers and their babies get the best service possible.”

Cathy Warwick, general secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “This award highlights the important, innovative and pioneering international work being done by students like Charlotte. I congratulate her on her commitment to the profession. It is important for people to know that midwifery education is not standing still and is constantly evolving. When student midwives are given the resources, support and freedom to develop their work and learning, the result is empowered midwives and better services, better care and better outcomes for mothers, babies and their families.”

Charlotte Monnelly said: “It is an honour and a privilege to receive this award and I am extremely proud that the RCM, with the support of Pampers, has seen my international placement as a worthwhile project to fund. This will be the experience of a lifetime”

Midwifery Lecturer at Glamorgan Debbie Lucey said, “We are delighted for Charlotte, winning this award is a wonderful opportunity for her. I am sure this experience will help with her professional development and we all look forward to hearing about her visit once she returns.”
